Sunrise over the Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park in the southern Gobi. What you can’t see is that to the back of the photographer are the immense and beautiful Khongoryn Els – known locally as Duut Mankhan – the Singing Sands – Mongolia’s largest and tallest sand dunes.
For me this quote by Conservation Ink sums up the magnificence and the pull of the Gobi Desert:
‘The Gobi Desert seems like earth reduced to its most basic elements: rock, sky, glaring sunlight and little else. The apparent emptiness is both compelling and intimidating. But the Gobi is not empty; it is filled with space, sky, history and landscapes.’
